As a Senior Wind Tunnel Model Designer, your role involves close collaboration with Aerodynamicists, Design Engineers, and Wind Tunnel Technicians. Working hand in hand with the aero team, you'll translate aerodynamic theories into physical models, ensuring they align with team´s objectives. Additionally, you'll spearhead model development, refining designs and structures. A crucial aspect of your responsibilities will be utilizing test data results to enhance car performance

What You Will Do

  • Model Design and Development: Creating and refining wind tunnel models based on aerodynamicists' specifications and design requirements, using CATIA V6 and engineering principles.
  • Collaboration and Iteration: Working closely with aerodynamicists and design engineers to translate concepts into physical models, incorporating feedback and iterating designs as needed.
  • Model Fabrication Oversight: Collaborating with technicians and external vendors to ensure accurate fabrication of models, overseeing the manufacturing process, and ensuring compliance with design specifications.
  • Testing Preparation: Preparing models for wind tunnel testing, ensuring they meet testing criteria, and addressing any adjustments required for accurate data collection.
  • Testing Support: Assisting in wind tunnel testing procedures, monitoring model performance, and making real-time adjustments as needed during testing sessions.
  • Cross-functional Communication: Collaborating with various teams, including aerodynamics, design, and manufacturing, to align on model requirements and ensure seamless integration into the overall vehicle development process.
  • Continuous Learning and Development: Keeping abreast of industry advancements, new technologies, and emerging trends in aerodynamics and model design, continuously improving skills and techniques.

What You Need To Succeed

  • Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalent R&D design experience
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a design role (advantage if it focusing on aerodynamics)
  • Motorsport professional working experience
  • Understanding testing procedures and equipment for accurate testing (Wind Tunnel expertise)
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience using CATIA for advanced surface design and robust model construction (inc. Advance Surface Design)
  • Ability to maintain a structured and organized design tree within CATIA for efficient model management
  • Creating sturdy and robust models in CATIA, ensuring durability and accuracy in wind tunnel testing
  • Proficiency in various plastic 3D printing methods, like SLS and SLA, for aerodynamic model prototyping and fabrication
  • Expertise in developing functional prototypes using various manufacturing methods, aligning with aerodynamic testing needs
  • Experience with GD&T principles for the manufacture of machined metal components
  • Ability to optimize model designs for ease of assembly, considering manufacturability and efficient assembly processes (DFA)
  • Knowledge of designing models that are conducive to manufacturing processes, ensuring ease of fabrication and production (DFM)
  • Proficient English.

Desirable Skills

  • Familiarity with composite materials and their properties
  • Additional courses or training in aerodynamics specialization
  • Metal 3D Printing Knowledge
  • CNC Machining Knowledge for precise model components
  • Knowledge about plastic 3D printing methods, like SLS and SLA, for aerodynamic model prototyping and fabrication
