The Role / Position Overview

Reporting to the Head of Platforms and Operations, we are looking for a manager to lead our Platform Management Team in Manila who will help us to:

  • Standardise how we manage our AWS cloud estate
  • Provide solutions for building and deploying new cloud based platforms
  • Collaborate with teams across FT Technology to build on ongoing backlog of improvements and capabilities to deliver

The role would suit someone who is looking to gain experience with running a small team of engineers who are focussed on managing and developing our already mature cloud estate. 

This person will need to be capable of taking on the combined role of line management, providing technical leadership and acting as a product owner managing the team’s workload.

Based at the FT’s office in Manila this role will cover a combination of Manila and UK office hours.  From time to time, some out of hours work may be required to support business impacting incidents.  Should this be required, appropriate remuneration will be agreed with your line manager.

This role is also part of the Manila Technical Leadership Group which has the responsibility of providing local leadership and stewardship to our various technology teams that are based in Manila. 

What you will work on  

Working alongside the team, you will:

  • Take on the role of Product Owner in managing the workload of the team and communicating with stakeholders within and outside of Engineering Enablement.
  • Actively engage with the rest of the Engineering Enablement leadership in formulating OKRS for the team.
  • Enhance how we manage and provision our cloud estate.
  • Use your experience and expertise to identify gaps, and recommend and implement solutions.
  • Provide technical stewardship, insight , coaching and training for team members.
  • Manage the day to day running of the team
Tech we work with 

The FT is cloud only and the majority of the technical systems we support are built using a mixture of:

  • Amazon Web Services, Heroku
  • GitHub, CircleCI
  • Javascript, Golang, Python - and others

We also use tools such as these when providing monitoring for our systems:

  • Graphite & Grafana
  • Splunk

We don’t expect you to have worked with all of these, but having experience in similar technologies would be advantageous. 

We would want someone with experience of working with AWS and previous exposure to programming languages, preferably python, but we are flexible about which one. 

Skills we are looking for: 

  • Strong working knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS and previous exposure to programming languages 
  • A good understanding of agile methodologies including product ownership
  • Previous experience or potential for leading a small engineering team. 
  • Ability to lead, coach and train others
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills with a strong customer focus
  • Able to describe complex technical issues clearly to a wide range of audiences
