About FT Product & Technology

Here at the Financial Times, gold-standard journalism is just the beginning. 500-people strong, our Product & Tech team keeps us ahead of the ever-changing digital landscape by delivering cutting-edge products to over one million digital subscribers every day. Our plans for growth rely on a diverse, dedicated and dynamic group of product, tech, delivery and data specialists - everyone’s welcome in this friendly, forward-thinking team. And with entrepreneurial spirit, intelligence and opportunity at every turn, there’s no limits to where your FT career will take you.

Overview: Team and Role

The FT is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Cloud Enablement team to help us build and operate our AWS and Heroku cloud platforms effectively. The team enables other technology teams at the FT to deliver systems quickly, safely and cost effectively using cloud technologies.

We’re committed to equality and diversity in the tech industry, and want to encourage applications from underrepresented backgrounds. We support and encourage flexible working, to be as inclusive as we can.

The Cloud Enablement team sits within our Engineering Enablement (EE) group. The EE group exists to help our engineering teams with cloud, code management, monitoring and many other topics. You can see a full breakdown of the group's teams and listen to a podcast where EE's Delivery Director, Victoria Morgan-Smith, is interviewed about how EE supports autonomous teams at the FT.

What you will work on

  • Develop solutions that help us run and govern a large AWS and Heroku cloud estate

  • Provide self-service APIs, tools and support that enable our tech teams to use cloud platforms quickly, safely and cost effectively

  • 10% time - a half day every week to work on your own projects and develop your skills

Tech we work with

We use the following technologies a lot: Python; Git; GoCD; AWS; Heroku; Lambda; API Gateway; CloudFormation; Config Rules; S3; Cloudhealth.

We don’t expect you to have worked with all of these but experience with some of them will be a bonus.

Key responsibilities

  • Work as part of a team using modern engineering practices including simple design, test-driven development, continuous delivery, defining infrastructure as code and service monitoring.

  • Be responsible for the development of high quality software - from idea through to delivery, into production and including ongoing maintenance.

  • Help to mentor junior team members and share technical knowledge within the team.

  • Provide support to other delivery teams at the FT, helping them to use cloud platforms efficiently, safely, and cost effectively.

Skills we are looking for

  • Strong programming and engineering skills with Python and working with AWS.

  • A natural bias towards test driving solution development.

  • Ability to take ownership of outcomes, and feel responsible for ensuring systems are available and operating well.

  • Understanding of the principles of continuous delivery and infrastructure as code.

  • Understanding of risk, cyber security and governance functions and building secure solutions.

Characteristics we value

  • Dedication to technical excellence, quality, security and reliability.

  • Effective communication and collaboration. We work together a lot.

  • Knowing when a task is done, and steering others to complete tasks or decisions.

  • Ability to decide appropriately when to buy versus build, and to communicate the reasons

The hiring process

After we review your application, the first stage will be a short video call with our Technical Recruiter. Following this we will invite you to meet with senior engineers and other members of FT Product & Technology. As part of this, the first step is a pair programming exercise in Python, with the aim of allowing you to demonstrate your strengths. This technical interview will be followed by a final stage cultural interview where we'll be able to decide whether we're a fit for each other.

We’re committed to equality and diversity in the tech industry, so we’ll be especially happy to see applications from under-represented backgrounds. We encourage this for example by considering part time roles and flexible working hours as well as tuning the hiring process to promoting diversity.

We have published our Engineering Progression framework and associated competencies for a Software Engineer.

  • 25 days of leave, increasing to 30 after two years. We also offer additional flexi-days at 30% pay.
  • Pension scheme: the FT will double your contribution up to 18% total

How we work

We offer a strict 35 hour working week to all staff in our London office. Our hybrid setup means staff are expected to come into the office 2 days a week on average. We operate flexibly and thus this 2 day a week figure should be taken as a general ratio of the time you will spend in the office.

Our office is located across the street from St. Paul's Cathedral and is easily accessible from all corners of London. There are the main train terminals such as Liverpool Street, Moorgate, Blackfriars, City Thameslink or Waterloo all situated within walking distance or there are several tube stations within a few mins walk such as Mansion House (District or Circle line), St. Paul's (Central line), Bank (Central or Waterloo & City line) or Barbican (Central, Hammersmith & City or Metropolitan lines).

Our commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace

The FT is committed to providing an inclusive working environment for all. We are an equal opportunities employer who seeks to recruit and appoint the best talent regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief.
