Overview: Team and Role

The FT is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Cloud Enablement team to help us build and operate our AWS and Heroku cloud platforms effectively. The team enables other technology teams at the FT to deliver systems quickly, safely and cost effectively using cloud technologies.

The Cloud Enablement team sits within our Engineering Enablement (EE) group. The EE group exists to help our engineering teams with cloud, code management, monitoring and many other topics. What you will work on

  • Develop solutions that help us run and govern a large AWS and Heroku cloud estate

  • Provide self-service APIs, tools and support that enable our tech teams to use cloud platforms quickly, safely and cost effectively

  • 10% time - a half day every week to work on your own projects and develop your skills

Tech we work with

We use the following technologies a lot: Python; Git; GoCD; AWS; Heroku; Lambda; API Gateway; CloudFormation; Config Rules; S3; Cloudhealth. 

We don’t expect you to have worked with all of these but experience with some of them will be a bonus.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Work as part of a team using modern engineering practices including simple design, test-driven development, continuous delivery, defining infrastructure as code and service monitoring.

  • Be responsible for the development of high quality software - from idea through to delivery, into production and including ongoing maintenance.

  • Help to mentor junior team members and share technical knowledge within the team.

  • Provide support to other delivery teams at the FT, helping them to use cloud platforms efficiently, safely, and cost effectively.

 

Skills we are looking for

  • Strong programming and engineering skills with Python and working with AWS.

  • A natural bias towards test driving solution development.

  • Ability to take ownership of outcomes, and feel responsible for ensuring systems are available and operating well.

  • Understanding of the principles of continuous delivery and infrastructure as code.

  • Understanding of risk, cyber security and governance functions and building secure solutions.

The hiring process

After we review your application, the first stage will be a short video call with our Technical Recruiter. Following this we will invite you to meet with senior engineers and other members of FT Product & Technology. As part of this, the first step is a pair programming exercise in Python, with the aim of allowing you to demonstrate your strengths. This technical interview will be followed by a final stage cultural interview where we'll be able to decide whether we're a fit for each other.

How we work

We offer a strict 35 hour working week to all staff in our London office. Our hybrid setup means staff are expected to come into the office 2 days a week on average. We operate flexibly and thus this 2 day a week figure should be taken as a general ratio of the time you will spend in the office.

Our office is located across the street from St. Paul's Cathedral and is easily accessible from all corners of London. There are the main train terminals such as Liverpool Street, Moorgate, Blackfriars, City Thameslink or Waterloo all situated within walking distance or there are several tube stations within a few mins walk such as Mansion House (District or Circle line), St. Paul's (Central line), Bank (Central or Waterloo & City line) or Barbican (Central, Hammersmith & City or Metropolitan lines).
