The Role / Position Overview

The FT’s Strategic Sales Directors are our most senior sales leaders. Their key focus is to enhance and deepen relationships across our top clients, tapping into multiple decision makers and - therefore - budgets. 


This position reports to the Head of Financial Sales, EMEA, and is responsible for a client/agency patch including 4 of our top sector clients, as well as 4 accounts that have been identified as clients ripe for development, specifically across the FT portfolio. These are the business’s most important accounts, and as such, require a sales director who is able to dive deeply into the accounts and identify opportunities for complex sales solutions for all parts of the business.  


Collaboration across teams within the FT is essential and we are looking for candidates that can show that they are able to deliver results through working effectively with editorial, marketing and advertising operations departments as well as colleagues, including research, thought leadership, branded content, and the rest of the FT Group. You will work closely with these teams to build compelling proposals based on client strategy, KPIs and outcomes.  


Key Responsibilities


  • Trading and negotiation - Actively offer creative ways to trade on accounts, understanding the client objectives and the FT’s needs, while ensuring no other business is negatively impacted.  Utilised the full breadth of the FT portfolio and drives overall growth of 15% on business patch YoY.
  • Creativity - In both idea generation and in creating value, creativity is a key skill demonstrated by SSDs.  Understand how your actions impact the wider business, be sympathetic to that, and deliver creative solutions that are beneficial to the wider business. Use an insight led, outcome based approach in all aspects of your work life.
  • Client relationship knowledge - Understanding market share, planning cycles, and all budget holding stakeholders from your client.  Have a strong working relationship with stakeholders, both client and agency, and position yourself as a consultant to their business. Personal relationship with 10 key stakeholders within each client. Identifies untapped opportunities within the client across marketing, sales, PR, comms and seeks out new contacts/relationships to deliver incremental revenue.
  • CRM - Salesforce as a daily part of your work life, tracking contacts, accounts, opportunities and conversations, both in email and face to face. 


Required Skills / Experience 


  • Ideally around 7 + years of consultative sales experience
  • Ability to sell across multiple titles and channels
  • Experience in a research and/or content environment
  • Proven track record of key account growth
  • Ability to negotiate with anyone from agency account executives through to client CMOs
  • Ability to take data and insight about content on FT.com and turn it into a compelling sales story 
  • Desirable but not essential: experience with Salesforce.
