Job Purpose

The Commercial Strategy & Insight team (CSI) at the FT plays a crucial role in helping deliver and maximize advertising revenue across the FT product portfolio. The CSI team’s aim is to build a very solid foundation for our sales stories and proposals through expert use of data- the CSI team produces industry-leading research as well as justification insights for advertising. This Insight coupled with a strategic approach to digital data (such as brand uplift, behavioural data) enables the team to marry insight, strategy and optimization together providing the advertising sales team with a unique, complete and compelling sales argument.

The CSI team sits within the Global Commercial Team (reporting into Laura Milsted, Global Advertising Director, B2B & Insight) and works predominantly with the Advertising sales team but also with the FT Production, Marketing, PR/Comms and Editorial teams.

The Insight Executive will be responsible for the delivery of research including management of quantitative projects, data interpretation and analysis, assisting with requests from the sales team, questionnaire design, report writing and presentations. In the short term, projects will be run alongside one of the team’s Managers.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the delivery of daily data requests for adsales (media rankings and schedule analysis based on the key media research surveys that the FT supports such as the Ipsos Global Business Influencer, Affluent EU, US). The Insight Executive will work closely with the Insight Assistant in the team on these requests.

  • Conduct research amongst FT readers to provide insights into reader sentiments on key industry trends to be shared with advertisers, demonstrating the value of the FT and supporting commercial revenue.

  • Work with the Senior Insight Managers in planning, writing and analysing questionnaires and deliver clear reports and focused presentations

  • Work on Advertiser led product research (such as HTSI readers survey) to provide compelling sales arguments to global ad sales team.

  • Project manage Advertiser bespoke studies to support advertiser campaigns. This could involve bespoke or tailored ROI projects supporting the ad sales effort. Initially this will be run with the Senior Insight Manager but ultimately independently.

  • Reporting and analysis: market intelligence, competitor activity, site usage, special projects.

  • WebAnalytics- work with CSI in using behavioural insights of our digital users for the benefit of adsales teams.


Essential skills and experience 

  • 1-2 years research experience. Commercial research experience is not essential but would be a benefit in this role.

  • Commercially minded as the Advertising team is the key stakeholder of the CSI department.

  • Strong analytical skills and a thorough understanding of Excel and other MS office packages.

  • Enthusiastic, enjoy making data come alive.

  • Project management skills to enable projects to deliver on time and on budget.

  • The ability to interpret data in such a way as to enhance the commercial proposition of the FT.

  • The ability to turn research data into compelling presentations to suit a variety of audiences.

  • Excellent presentation skills.

  • The ability to engage and interact with people at all levels around the business such that useful research data is available to all.

  • An understanding of the appropriateness and effectiveness of various techniques (both quantitative and qualitative) to best solve different research needs.

  • Although not essential, experience of using Cross tabulation software (such as Telmar/IMS) and online survey tools (such as Qualtrics, Survey Monkey etc.) would be beneficial.

  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
