The Role / Position Overview

FT Specialist is looking for an executive editor to join its management team tasked with leading our mission to strive for the highest standards of editorial excellence across our UK and European titles. 

The successful candidate would be joining FT Specialist as it seeks to grow through new product innovation and will be ultimately responsible for ensuring that our quality journalism is at the forefront of this. The executive editor will work closely with the editors of our nine existing titles to ensure their editorial output and strategies are aligned with the wider business goals of the department. The successful candidate will also be expected to work with our New Product Development team as they plan and execute the launch of new editorially-led products. 

The successful candidate will need a keen eye for detail and extensive experience of creating content, and leading editorial teams in both a business to business and business to consumer environment. The successful candidate will work in tandem with the managing editor FT Specialist (Europe) to help maintain the high standards of editorial excellence across the department. The executive editor will also work with leadership colleagues from commercial, marketing, finance and product and technology as part of the FT Specialist leadership team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working with editors of FT Specialist’s nine current titles on their editorial strategy. Assessing the quality of editorial output across all our titles and also its alignment with the wider business strategy
  • Advising editors on editorial best practice, aligned with their content strategy
  • Developing a ‘global view’ of FT Specialist editorial’s capabilities and working with the managing editor to ensure each editorial team is appropriately staffed to produce the best possible content for their individual audiences
  • Acting as a touch point for all senior editorial staff across FT Specialist on content issues
  • Working with editors to identify where our editorial teams need improving and to work with colleagues to fill those gaps either through training or recruitment
  • Build relationships with colleagues in other editorial teams across the FT Group.

Required Skills / Experience 

Essential

  • Experience of editing in both the business to business and business to consumer sectors
  • A track record of creating high value content and subscription products for a Business to Business audience. 
  • Demonstrable leadership skills
  • Experience of mentoring colleagues and the ability to consult, coach and advise senior editors to help deliver key outcomes including the creation of new content which adds value to existing products. 
  • Track record of collaboration with fellow editors
  • The ability to work across various different titles simultaneously

Desirable

  • Understanding of business and financial journalism
  • Experience of working on editorial transformation projects
  • Experience of launching new titles.
