The Role / Position Overview

The tech and energy industries have boundless opportunities for growth and the EMEA team is looking for a candidate who is excited and passionate about them in equal measure and wants to build their knowledge within  these  fast paced, ever-changing sectors. We are a collaborative, creative and inquisitive team that is looking for someone like-minded to join us.

The majority of your role will be focused on the Technology sector - however, we work closely with the Energy team as well. This means that when there is a conversation around Green Tech, for example, you will be asked to help on the brief. In addition to this, you will be expected to help across the Energy sector and share your expertise with the Account Exec on the Energy team when needed. We work on a joint team target with the Energy team - so it is important for the successful candidate to really understand the trends affecting this sector and implement their knowledge when applicable.

The position reports directly to the Strategic Sales Director of Technology and Energy, and is responsible for a specific patch covering both direct clients and agencies. There is a strong focus around new business (60%) as well as account management (40%) of the existing base. We would want to see a strong outbound new business focus, which would include attending industry events and analysing our competitors. Driving renewals for existing clients will be key to your success and will depend on nurturing strong relationships. Candidates are required to implement learnings to pitch to clients and agencies proactively to maximise revenue potential and grow incremental revenue

Collaboration across teams within the FT is essential and we are looking for candidates who have strong relationship building skills with both internal and external teams. Our team designs campaign executions that sit across multiple departments at the FT - we are looking for the successful candidate to have experience in structuring cross-departmental and multi-platform deals. You will need to  build strong relationships with stakeholders across both the Tech Energy teams too. 

The Account Manager is a senior position and we would expect you to help mentor and guide junior members across the Tech and Energy team.

 

Sales skills and knowledge:

  • Sales experience: 3+ Years B2B media sales experience across direct clients and agencies - knowledge/experience of the Tech and Energy sectors is an advantage
  • Digital advertising experience: Must understand the digital advertising landscape and have experiencing in selling high-value campaigns - whilst being able to own client communication
  • Trading and negotiation - The successful candidate would have a minimum of 5 years working in a sales environment and will be used to trading and negotiating with clients. You will liaise and work with the FT’s Head of Trading to create bespoke trading strategies. Ultimately we will want you to deliver a minimum of 10% YoY growth within your patch
  • Creativity - The solutions that we create for clients are uniquely crafted to meet their objectives and KPIs. A core component of our offering is content (whether it be Editorial or Branded content), you will need to be creative when designing these multi-touchpoint, highly strategic campaigns. A part of this creativity will come from attending Tech (and Energy) sector events and thinking of proactive content ideas to take to market
  • Building client relationships - Be able to build strong relationships with clients - whether through their media agency or the client direct
  • CRM management - Salesforce as a daily part of your work life, tracking contacts, accounts, opportunities and conversations, both in email and face to face. We need someone who has experience in working with CRM management systems - added bonus if it's with Salesforce!
  • Communication - Proven success at talking to senior client personnel and their agency counterparts, working with multiple organisations and departments to create, convince and execute communication plans.  Able to communicate effectively both on the phone and face to face and be articulate in written communication and proposal decks. You should be able to demonstrate how you can change your approach depending on whether speaking to a Tech or Energy sector client and understand the modern media world
  • Competitive/media knowledge - Understand the FT’s competitive set and the FT’s USPs against them.  Know how to position the FT in the best light possible.  Understand how to read and interpret client metrics and outcomes, and how that translates to form a brief response. Run market research against the FT’s Tech and Energy media competitive set.

 

What you’ll be measured on:

KPIs

  • Financial Performance: Grow current revenue from client patch, as well as new business generation.  
  • Client-facing: representing the Financial Times Group to customers (both agency and client direct).  You should be having 4-6 meetings per week. 
  • Relationships: building close relationships with key advertising clients and agencies.  You should know 2 budget holders/influencers per client.
  • New business: seek out new business opportunities from your existing clients as well as new businesses who have not used the FT previously or, within 3 years or more.
