The role
The Financial Times is looking for a New York-based data journalist to join its award-winning visual and data journalism team. You will be a key member of a nimble, multidisciplinary team, responsible for both reporting and producing original stories and enhancing our existing coverage with sharp empirical analysis and effective data visualisation. Given the FT's focus on business and finance, a background in those subjects is an asset.
You will report to the US senior data journalist in New York, work closely with reporters and editors in New York and Washington, DC, and collaborate with visual and data colleagues around the world.
Key duties

Using data, analytical techniques and graphics to find and tell stories—covering both news stories and deeper analyses

Producing rigorous and compelling empirical and visual work, often on deadline

Developing relationships and working closely with reporters and editors in the US to bolster our ongoing report with data analysis and visualisation

Assisting reporters and news editors with data research and display

Collaborating with other FT visual and data journalists on bigger visual journalism projects
Essential skills and experience
-
Confidence in core data journalism and data science techniques: data sourcing, cleaning, analysis and visualisation

Comfortable pitching story ideas to editors and championing your work

Demonstrable knowledge of and experience with data sources in the US

Ability to work both independently and collaborate closely with colleagues in a multidisciplinary team

Strong communication skills, particularly the ability to explain quantitative analyses to non-specialist audiences

A strong portfolio of written and visual work in data journalism or quantitative academic science
Preferred skills

A demonstrable interest in core FT topics including finance, economics, business and politics

Experience using data visualisation effectively in reporting

A proven ability to learn continuously and independently in order to keep your skills at the forefront of current practice

Salary range
A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $80,000 to $120,000. To ensure pay fairness, the successful candidate will be offered a salary within the estimated salary range based on a number of considerations including but not limited to: skill set; experience and training; certifications; and other business and organisational needs. The disclosed range estimate is for our NYC office and has not been adjusted for other locations.

How we work
Our hybrid setup means staff are expected to come into the office 3 days a week. Our New York office is located on Hudson Street between Greenwich Village and Soho.
