The Role

The FT’s visual and data journalism team is looking for an experienced data journalist. The successful applicant will collaborate with Hong Kong-based news editors, correspondents across Asia as well as data and visual journalists in London and New York, concentrating on data-driven stories for the Asia-Pacific region.

Key aspects of the role include

  • Collaborating with FT reporters in the Asia-Pacific region, using your data and graphics skills to bring insight to readers
  • Spotting opportunities for the use of analytical techniques to find and tell stories, covering both news stories and deeper analyses
  • Working with HK editors to build an awareness of data journalism and its potential to boost engagement with FT readers in the Asia region
  • Collaborating with other FT visual and data journalists on bigger visual journalism projects

Essential attributes

  • Confidence, developed through practical experience, of core data journalism techniques: data sourcing, cleaning and analysis, preferably using R or a similar environment and version control systems such as Git.
  • Numeracy and the ability to think statistically are vital. The ability to work independently, though aware of when/how to collaborate with others in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Strong communication skills, including data visualisation as well as the ability to explain quantitative data to non-specialist audiences
  • Demonstrable knowledge of data sources in the Asia-Pacific region
  • Ability to work well with a team that is distributed across time zones

Experience

  • You will likely have a strong portfolio of work in data journalism or quantitative academic social science, ideally focused on business, economics or politics in Asia.
  • A demonstrable interest in global economics, business and politics, with a particular focus on Asia.
  • Relevant language skills (e.g. Mandarin) would also be a distinct advantage.
  • A proven ability to learn continuously and independently in order to keep your skills at the forefront of current practice is vital in this role.

Please submit your application by the end of the day, Wednesday 1st May 2024.
