The role

The Financial Times is seeking a talented journalist to create an all-new India newsletter, drawing on the global authority of our coverage, and expanding it with a greater level of insight into the business, finance and tech developments that matter to India. It is both a rare opportunity to build a newsletter around your own voice and to join a world-class editorial team, whose achievements last year included landing an interview with PM Narendra Modi and breaking important developments on the Adani/Hindenburg story.

Explaining India to outsiders, in the style of a foreign correspondent, is not the mission. Rather, we want to create a platform for an original, opinionated writer to join the FT’s global line-up, commenting on the stories that matter to a sophisticated and India-literate audience. We have some preferences on the subject matter, but beyond that, there is considerable scope for the writer and their vision to help us define the nature of the newsletter.

The chief duty will be to research and write a regular newsletter. That will involve a significant amount of reporting, to make sure the newsletter has something meaningful to say, but breaking stories is not the focus here. A newsletter is more than just a piece of text and the writer will be expected to engage with all the tasks involved in putting it together. Depending on time and your particular skills, the ideal candidate will also collaborate with the wider FT Asia team on editorial tasks.

This role will be based in either the FT’s New Delhi or Mumbai Bureau and will report to the South Asia bureau chief and to the head of newsletters in London.

Your skills

The fundamental criteria is to have original, interesting things to say, and those thoughts should be worthy of publication in the Financial Times. Our readers sit at the top of business, finance and government, in India and beyond. Their expectation from our opinion writing is that it will be fresh, insightful and provocative - but always intelligent, considered and well-grounded in facts.

A newsletter thrives or fails based on the writer’s ability to connect with their readers. You will be a great writer in English with a turn of phrase. Within the confines of FT style, we want your sensibility to come across. Strong social media skills to engage with readers and promote FT work would be welcome.

We are open to writers with varying levels of experience. We cannot induct a complete beginner to journalism in this role, so you need some background, but youth is no obstacle if the ideas and writing are there; similarly, we welcome an established writer if they have a lot to say, and especially if they have name recognition and an existing audience. Previous experience working on a newsletter would help but is not essential.

Collegiality is a central part of the FT’s culture and we expect you to work closely with the FT’s existing editorial team in India and with colleagues around the world.

Please submit your application by the end of the day, Tuesday 21st May 2024.
