The Role

We are looking for a distinguished reporter with a track record of scoops and smart features to join the FT’s San Francisco bureau to lead one of our most important corporate beats.

The role centres on the two Seattle-based tech giants, Microsoft and Amazon, which are competing at the vanguard of artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

Microsoft has an early lead in the race to commercialise the technology through its partnership with OpenAI. We want a reporter to reveal how the software giant plans to turn those billions of dollars of investment into profit and reveal more about Microsoft’s future, from battles with global regulators to its longstanding rivalry with Google.

Hot on Microsoft’s heels in the AI race is Amazon. Through its cloud computing arm AWS, and investment in start ups such as Anthropic, the company has ambitions of its own in the sector. Covering Amazon also means delving deep into issues around global ecommerce, media, logistics, labour  — and the next act of Jeff Bezos.

The beat includes other responsibilities that require less day-to-day focus, but provide plenty of other targets where you can make a mark. This includes gig economy groups such as Uber and Airbnb, as well as other ecommerce, cloud and software-as-a-service groups.

Tech is constantly evolving. This job requires a reporter who can show initiative, flexibility and the willingness to take hold of more companies as they rise in prominence. In this way, you will need to be collegiate, sharing tips and supporting the coverage of your fellow reporters in San Francisco, London, Beijing and beyond.

The demands are high, but the opportunity is extensive: reporting on the people and companies that will change global tech and business in the years to come.

Please submit your application by the end of the day, Wednesday 17th July 2024.
