About the role

We are looking for an Employment Counsel to join Fonoa’s legal team as our first employment specialist, responsible for managing global employment matters with a focus on Europe.

We hire employees on an international scale, across many jurisdictions, and continuously increase this number by hiring in new countries. We are looking for a dynamic and detailed-oriented lawyer who is able to handle multi-jurisdictional employment matters, identify related legal risks and provide simple and business-oriented advice. This is a unique role where you will research the employment regulations we have to cater to as the company grows and implement them to ensure ongoing compliance.

You will be working closely with our Hiring, People and Finance teams. You will be expected to guide and educate them on employment-related issues and risks. This role will report to our General Counsel.

As we are a fast-growing company, tasks and priorities for this position may quickly change. While you will be the go-to person for all employment-related issues, you may also be expected to assist with other legal matters occasionally, including contract drafting and data protection, but you are not expected to be an expert in these areas. This makes the role a great opportunity for a flexible and collaborative team player.

What you will be doing:

  • Advising other teams and building internal strategies on employment matters, including relating to hiring, employment agreements, compensation and benefits, performance management, leaves of absence and sick pay, business re-organisations, inclusion and diversity programs, investigations of misconduct and policy violations, notice periods and terminations
  • Determining the legal requirements and employment practices in various countries and helping us understand the locations where we can hire compliantly
  • Monitoring legal trends and legislative changes in countries where we employ or have an interest in employing
  • Drafting and reviewing employment agreements and other documents signed during the hiring process, such as IP assignment agreements, to ensure they are comprehensive, enforceable and consistent with our principles
  • Assisting with other legal issues during the hiring process, including by supporting new hires on employment related questions and requirements in line with local employment regulations specific to the country in question
  • Working closely with external service providers and, where necessary, external legal counsel for employment-related advice, and coordinating their work
  • Drafting and assisting us implement employment-related company policies and build efficient processes to maintain legal compliance
  • Providing guidance on remote work engagements
  • Investigating and responding to employee issues, including complaints, poor performance and policy violations, and providing legal advice during the employee offboarding process
  • Constantly improving our employee lifecycle processes by proactively recognising, managing and responding to potential employment risks

You’re a great fit if: 

  • You bring 4+ years of professional legal experience, including qualification to practice law in England & Wales or in a EU jurisdiction
  • You are familiar with global employment regulations and practices
  • You have ideally worked as a specialist for employment law, and have a solid understanding of how other fields of law interact with employment law (such as intellectual property, data protection, tax)
  • You have international experience, either working abroad and/or coordinating international legal advice on employment related matters
  • You have previous in-house experience working in the technology industry
  • You have an interest in being part of a global remote organisation, and building compliance from an employment law perspective
