About the role:

This is a hybrid field-based role with 3 days travelling to our Customer fulfilment Centres (CFC’s) and spokes and 2 days working from home.

The Food Safety Auditor is responsible for evaluating the food safety and hygiene standards achieved across all operational sites against the policies and procedures detailed in Ocado’s Quality Management System. You will conduct audits and assessments of Ocado Logistics operations and associated service providers to a prescribed schedule and in line with business requirements.  This is a nationwide role,  with audits conducted periodically against a risk-based schedule, and supplementary audits conducted to assess root cause analysis. 

You will be the first point of contact for audit-related enquiries and therefore must have good interpersonal and communication skills. The Food Safety Auditor is required to fully engage with Operations Managers and their teams to ensure the audit process is fully understood, non-compliances are acted upon and continuous improvements are seen. You will be the go-to person for sites to contact for audit-related processes.  This role will require you to identify and evaluate risk and work collaboratively with operational teams to pursue and implement opportunities for continuous improvement. The business will look to you to identify risk and share best practice across sites. 

Audits conducted of onsite service providers will require interaction with the contract key account managers and will assist Facilities Management in monitoring service level agreements. You will work closely with the Food Technology Lead and other members of the TP&C Team, and you will grow your knowledge and skills in food safety and compliance. The Food Safety Auditor will provide guidance and support on technical issues and assist in the development of policies and procedures. You will work with the Food Technology Lead to develop a method to measure and periodically report audit findings and use data insight to develop and implement a meaningful action plan aimed at improving Ocado’s food safety and quality culture. 

You will be:

As a Food Safety Auditor, you will need to 

  • Responsible for conducting audits periodically in line with the internal audit programme.
  • Ability to identify and accurately categorise risk and non-conformances in terms of severity. 
  • Ensure audits are scheduled and completed in line with company requirements. 
  • Ensure all specific deadlines are met, and conduct revisits and ad-hoc audits as necessary.
  • Periodically update and create audit templates and associated documents. 
  • Create clear and accurate audit reports with clear findings, recommendations and next steps.  
  • Communicate and drive action on poor audit performance, and work collaboratively with the operational team to foster continuous improvement 
  • Lead opening and closing meetings with key stakeholders and provide guidance and coaching to key stakeholders where required to ensure compliance requirements are fulfilled. 
  • Ensure non-conformances are addressed and closed out within an agreed timescale. 
  • Present audit findings to stakeholders periodically with clear action plans. 
  • Use audit data to identify emerging trends within the operation, and develop reports with actions to improve engagement and understanding of risk.
  • Ensure root cause analysis is effective and closed out within the agreed timescale. 
  • Participate in the review and development of company standards, policies, and procedures. 
  • Contribute to projects and environmental sampling where required 
  • Assist with 3rd party audits and provide support for new site openings 
  • Provide operational support during peak seasonal trading as required and deputise for colleagues as required by the business. 
  • Participate in on-call duties (subject to knowledge and proficiency) 

About you:

The ideal candidate must have the following

  • A degree qualification in Food Science related subject 
  • Minimum Food Safety Level 4 (or equivalent)
  • 3 years experience in a food safety audit role within the UK/EU. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Flexible approach and available to travel nationwide (full driving licence) 
  • Experience of coaching operational staff in food safety requirements 
  • Ability to evaluate food safety requirements in various operational environments 
  • Focus on quality, accuracy and attention to detail. 
  • Respond to change where required depending on business needs.  
  • Highly organised and self-motivated. 

Preferred 

  • Level 4 HACCP & Food Safety 
  • A Lead Auditor qualification
