Director of Machine Learning

About the role    

As part of our rapid growth, we’re now looking for someone to lead the AI and Data team within the business. Initially the role will be to work with the team on building a tool that we believe is not only key to the success of Material Evolution, but will also play a significant role in the future of the low-carbon cement industry as a whole. We’re seeking an experienced and visionary Machine Learning leader to join our dynamic team. As the lead, you will play a pivotal role in driving innovation, taking cutting-edge tools from concept through early development, and ultimately commercialising them. Your expertise in machine learning, data visualization, and strategic planning will be critical to our success.

About you

We’re looking for...

Leadership and Team Management:

• Lead a small team of machine learning engineers and data scientists.
• Foster collaboration, mentorship, and professional growth within the team.

Product Development Lifecycle:

• Take ownership of machine learning tools and solutions from concept to commercialization.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (R&D, operations, and commercial) to build a product that delivers across the business as a whole

Data Visualization and Communication:

• Create compelling visualizations to communicate insights and findings.
• Present results to stakeholders, both technical and non-technical.

Problem-Solving and Process Improvement:

• Identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and areas for improvement.
• Implement process enhancements to optimize workflows.

Product Design and Strategic Planning:

• Collaborate with product designers to create user-friendly interfaces.
• Develop a strategic roadmap for product enhancements and iterations.

Technical Skills:

• Python: Expertise in Python programming for machine learning and data analysis.
• Tableau or similar for visualisation
• Emerging Technologies: Stay abreast of the latest advancements in machine learning and related fields.

Strategic Thinking:

• Develop and execute strategic plans aligned with organisational goals.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Materials Science, Engineering).
• Proven experience leading machine learning projects and teams.
• Strong problem-solving abilities and a passion for innovation.
• Excellent communication skills to convey complex ideas to diverse audiences.
• Strategic mindset with the ability to balance short-term goals and long-term vision.

This is a first of its kind position within Mevo, a strategic role at the heart of Data and AI in a company at its most exciting stage of development. You’ll need to be happy creating structure and building from early stages. You will need to be:

• Demonstrably experienced: You’ll have demonstrable success leading, inspiring and organising teams in a similar position, taking a product from concept to commercialisation
• Data driven: Use data-driven insights to inform decision-making.
• A problem solver: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to anticipate issues, evaluate alternatives, and make data-driven decisions.
• Technically expert: You must be comfortable being hands-on with Python. Your career may have pushed you to becoming more strategic, but you’ll probably still be keen on building in Python (so even if you’re just keeping up to speed in your spare time, you probably can’t give it up completely)!
• A great leader: You’ll be very comfortable taking concepts and challenges and inspiring others to deliver. You relish the privilege of leadership and you’re experienced in leading remote teams.
• An excellent communicator: You can communicate well at all levels and in technical and commercial discussions. You’re happy explaining the very technical in ways that can be understood by non-technical audiences.
