About your teams 

MOIA has awesome teams and is organized in several business domains. As a Director of Engineering, you will be responsible for one domain and the technical teams within the domain. You pair with the business domain owner to support the teams in finding the right balance between technical excellence, maintaining a high customer focus and reliably deliver product increments. This requires also close collaboration with MOIA Operations Germany GmbH, which is responsible for our service, manages our hubs, fully electrical fleets, drivers and our customer service. The role includes technical leadership as well as people management. Besides the work inside your domain, you are part of the overarching technical leadership team with all the Directors, Chapter Leads, and the CTO. 

The engineering teams use modern languages (e.g., Kotlin, TypeScript, Scala, Rust, Golang, Swift, Dart) in combination with cloud services (e.g., AWS Lambda, DynamoDB, SQS, Kinesis, RDS and Kubernetes) and are responsible for the discovery of what product increment to deliver next, as well as the full software lifecycle, including testing and operating the services (“you build it, you run it”).  

What you will do 

  • Collaborate proactively with multiple (distributed) teams 
  • Influence the product roadmap together with the Business Domain Owner 
  • Lead some world-class teams and the chapter leads in a servant leadership style
  • Support our bottom-up tech-culture and empower your teams to take responsibility
  • Contribute to the overall company strategy together with your peers across product, tech and design, and communicate it well to teams at different flight levels
  • Account for the scaling of MOIA and prepare the organizational design for the future
  • Take an active role in shaping and developing the MOIA (tech) culture 

What will help you to fulfill your role 

  • A deep understanding of building digital products and modern software engineering, ideally at scale 
  • A strong background in technology that is used in companies like MOIA 
  • Having a deep knowledge of team and organizational setups, e.g. Conway’s Law, and agile methods and frameworks 
  • Having a strong focus on people leadership 
  • Experience in growing and enabling diverse international teams 
  • Experience in successfully collaborating with stakeholders from different functions, including compliance topics regarding our service operation
  • Strong interests in bringing your products forward and having a strong customer focus as well as a good technical understanding 
  • Excellent communication skills in English and an interest in helping highly autonomous and cross-functional teams align to work together towards a shared goal 

Bonus points, if additionally, you have experience in one or more of the following areas: 

  • Software delivery in the context of iOS and Android applications 
  • Employing techniques from statistics, machine learning and operations research to business applications 
  • Handling customer requests and bug reports 
  • Solid knowledge in German
