The Company

Octopus Legacy is the place to plan for death and find support after loss. When people think about planning for death they think about wills, life insurance and funerals. We take these cold processes and turn them into something more human. Share more than money: leave voice notes, music, recipes. Shape a legacy that connects you while you're here. And after you're gone.

Founded by Sam after his mum died suddenly, we’re a group of people who work in death because we’ve been affected by it. We know the difference a good plan makes, and what it’s like when there isn’t one.

Death can come between us, leave mess, legal fees, frustration. But it can also make us stronger. We see a world where people talk openly about death, and work out the real meaning of legacy, one that connects to them. We’re here to make that world happen.

The Role

We’re hiring an M&A Associate to help support us with a massive outbound function that we’re launching as part of our goal to reach 1m clients. This role will be focused on building out our business by reaching out to existing legal firms and broaching the conversation of M&A. A bit like how Octopus Energy recently onboarded Bulb’s clients. We can’t reveal too much without signing NDAs but the scope of this project is enormous. You’ll also be working alongside Octopus’ M&A team to help with the onboarding of these new clients.

As the founding member of our M&A function, you'll play a pivotal role in building and expanding our M&A initiatives. Your efforts will not only shape the direction of our M&A strategy but also pave the way for your own professional growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Market Research: Research to identify potential targets for mergers or acquisitions. This involves analysing industry trends, competitor activities, and market dynamics to pinpoint opportunities for growth or consolidation.
  • Lead Generation: Actively sourcing new leads through various channels such as industry databases, market reports, conferences, networking events, and referrals. This may also involve utilising online platforms and social media to identify potential targets and initiate contact.
  • Qualification: Evaluating leads, conducting preliminary assessments, analysing financial statements, and assessing the target company's market position.
  • Communication and Relationship Management: Communicate with stakeholders,  including executives, owners, and advisors of target companies.
  • Deal Sourcing Strategy: Developing and implementing strategies to optimize deal sourcing efforts, including refining search criteria, leveraging technology and data analytics, and continuously improving the lead generation process.
  • Pipeline Management: Maintaining a pipeline of prospective M&A opportunities and tracking their progress through various stages of the deal lifecycle.
  • Due Diligence: Lead due diligence processes and coordinate with legal and other specialists.
  • Reporting and Analysis: Providing regular updates and reports on lead generation activities, pipeline status, and market trends to senior management.

  • Demonstrated history of successful deal origination.
  • Experience of exceeding sales targets.
  • Strong networks in the legal market (preferred).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to build rapport and trust. You have a high EQ and an empathetic nature.
  • Highly organised, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities effectively.
