The United Kingdom is facing an unprecedented cost of living crisis. Inflation has soared to 9.0% (the highest it has been in 40 years), the cost of energy, food and other necessities have gone through the roof and interest rates have risen for the first time in decades. As a result, we are seeing more and more individuals and families going into debt, due to circumstances out of their control.

Unfortunately, the way companies engage with customers facing debt problems is deeply broken - it is an analogue, robotic, one-size-fits-all approach that does not take the individual's circumstances into consideration and is too often managed by antiquated debt collection agencies, who still use analogue and predatory tactics to engage with consumers.

At Ophelos, we take a radically different approach. We are building software and AI products that help individuals and businesses manage debt in a more humane and efficient way. Our products support individuals and families on their journey to becoming debt-free, and positively impact millions of people's lives.

Ophelos launched in June of 2021 and agreed to be acquired by Intrum in 2023. We count some of the UK’s leading companies as our clients from high-growth fintech startups like Butter and Creditspring to billion-pound companies like Klarna and Octopus.

The role - VP of Engineering

We are excited to be hiring a pivotal new role as we look for an innovative, ambitious, impact-driven VP of Engineering to lead our technology teams, and help us build world-class products which improve financial health for individuals and businesses.

As VP of Engineering, you’ll lead our technology organisation and will be responsible for the expansion of our tech team from 25 to 50+ members over the next 12-24 months. You will contribute directly to our ambitious business strategy as a key player in our leadership team, and collaborate with our technology leads and stakeholders to translate business strategy & objectives into a dynamic technology roadmap and delivery plan, where you’ll be trusted with full responsibility for execution.

This role will be primarily based in our London office for 2-3 days a week, and report directly to our Co-founder & CEO, Amon.

In this role, you’ll get to:

  • Lead the execution of software development while implementing product engineering best practices.
  • Amplify our technology org structure, processes, and culture to enable the engineering team to work and scale efficiently.
  • Inspire, coach, and mentor a team of direct reports to continuously improve and grow their careers at Ophelos.
  • Collaborate with our leadership team to build our business strategy, and translate this into achievable delivery plans with our Head of Architecture.

About you

We believe that no one is the finished article, so even if you don't match all of the skills below we would love to hear from you. However, some experience in the following is important for this role:

  • Significant experience in leading and scaling engineering teams (50+), optimising engineering processes and building high-performance cultures.
  • You have a track record of managing technology teams who have successfully shipped, software products, ideally in a financial services environment.
  • You’re exceptional at using data to drive your thinking, can identify key metrics to evaluate the success of your work, and can clearly articulate the results to stakeholders.
  • You can work effectively with a diverse range of people and working styles to get stuff done, and can thoughtfully and constructively challenge and influence the people you work with.
  • You’re ambitious, passionate, and can lead with empathy.
  • Desirable: Experience building AI products.
