Your day to day: 

As the Lead Data Engineer, your mission is to drive the technical development and evolution of a scalable, modern data platform that empowers distributed data product teams to improve the quality of our data through clear ownership of domain aligned data products. 

  • Data Platform Excellence: Lead the development and operation of a reliable data platform in production environments, enabling self-service capabilities for de-centralised data product teams, ensuring the right level of scalability, reliability, and trust in their data products. 
  • Tech Leadership and Mentorship: Working alongside the Engineering Manager - provide technical leadership to Senior Data Engineers within the team, fostering a culture of collaboration, feedback, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement, ensuring technical excellence across the team. 
  • Pricing Optimisation: Work closely with data engineers, pricing analysts, data scientists and ML engineers to ensure the data platform provides the right capabilities to maintain our competitive advantage by innovating and building out a more advanced pricing optimisation market model to support our growth targets over the next 3-5 years. 

Who are you: 

  • Proven experience leading Senior Data Engineers, setting technical standards, and promoting a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Expertise in designing and developing scalable data platforms, with experience in batch/streaming data processing (AWS Glue, Apache Spark, Flink) and data storage solutions (Amazon Redshift, S3, DynamoDB). 
  • Strong understanding of event-driven architectures (SNS/SQS, Kinesis) and experience with orchestration tools like GitHub Actions and CloudFormation 
  • Conceptual understanding of Data Products as governed, discoverable assets, and how to build them to support business insights and decision-making. 
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL for querying large datasets and writing optimised, efficient code. 
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into business-friendly language, effectively communicating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. 

Not essential but desirable 

  • Experience deploying ML models in production environments, particularly with AWS SageMaker or similar tools. 
  • Familiarity with data challenges in the insurance industry, though not essential
