About the role

We’re looking for a Linux focused Systems Engineer for our worldwide based IT Operations team.

The ideal candidate will have some of the skills outlined below but there is a huge amount of scope to grow your skills in the areas of Linux and especially cloud based system administration.

The team has a strong culture of knowledge sharing and collaboration, both within the team and with technical teams around the world.

What you will do: 

  • You will be responsible for helping with the server maintenance/patching/building of Linux hosts deployed onto our VMWare servers in London and West Coast USA.
  • You will work with other members of the team to ensure bug fixes, server patches and assist with updates.
  • Carrying out administration tasks (deployments, upgrades) on the Amazon AWS cloud. Utilising AWS CLI tools and the web-based administration initially, with a move to terraform as an Infrastructure as Code tool. Working with Site reliability engineers and Cloud architects to grow the next generation of our AWS environment.
  • Manage, troubleshoot and monitor all system errors associated with the above.
  • You will regularly review and fix alerts across the 800+ systems that we have, using CheckMk, Grafana, New Relic and other monitoring tools.
  • As well as looking for trends and working pro-actively to mitigate issues before they arise.
  • As required you will add alerting and integration into YouGov’s Slack communication tool or via email.
  • Ideally you will have a good working knowledge of either, python, Perl or bash scripting languages to assist with tasks.
  • In both the cloud and on-prem we use a vast range of open source tools, you should have some exposure to some of the following and welcome the opportunity to gain experience in many more!
  • Kubernetes (on-prem and EKS), Elasticsearch and OpenSearch, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ, Redis, Cassandra, Puppet.

What you will bring:

  • Proven experience in the field
  • BSc in Computer Science or similar
  • Wide understanding of Linux and ideally AWS cloud administration
  • Specific knowledge of systems and processes used in YouGov’s architecture including but not limited to Kubernetes, Ubuntu Linux LTS versions and VMWare.
  • Exposure to Open Source products but especially some or all of the following; MongoDB, PostgreSQL, ElasticSearch, Kubernetes, Puppet.
  • Strong understanding on IT security principles and principles of networking.
  • AWS Cloud experience – ideally also including terraform deployments (Infra as code) but AWS cli and WebUI administration for EC2, EKS, RDS and OpenSearch as a starting point.
  • Excellent standard of verbal and written English
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities under pressure
  • Collaborate and run change control process for projects and tasks.
  • Have an up-to-date knowledge of new technologies and security threats
  • Ability to prioritise and execute tasks in an effective manner
  • Experience working in a collaborative and team environment, but also has the ability to manage projects single-handedly if required
