At HR Wallingford, we design smart, resilient solutions across the natural and built environments to help everyone live and work more sustainably with water. By harnessing research, data insights and the power of our collective expertise, we help the world to better understand the changing influence and impact of water.

We have been at the forefront of developing the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in coastal and maritime engineering for over a decade, and we have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the subject, helping our clients consider and understand the marine environment at all stages of the project life cycle. This is from concept development and master planning through to design, construction and operation.

If you want to contribute to this on ongoing success we  have an exciting opportunity for a CFD Developer to join our team, where you will be supported with your growth and development, undertaking consultancy and research projects. These will be particularly in the marine renewables and hydraulics sectors worldwide and you will be guided and supported by the CFD Lead. This is a varied role, providing technical input on day to day activities, using modelling applications, and helping the delivery of technical and commercial CFD related projects. You will also participate in research activities.

This role is based at our Howbery Park campus in Oxfordshire, UK. While this is a full-time role, helping our people achieve a healthy work-life balance is important to us, and we would be happy to explore flexible working and job share arrangements, including part-time working. Please talk to us about the flexibility you need. We can’t promise to give you exactly what you want, but we do promise not to judge you for asking.

About you

You will have an MSc or equivalent and ideally a PhD with a demonstrable track record in the development and application of CFD models. Ideally you will  hold or be seeking to attain professional membership of a recognised institution (e.g. ICE). You will need to show significant experience in developing CFD solvers within opensource (such as OpenFOAM) or in-house software packages. You will also be able to demonstrate experience using High Performance Computing (HPC) environments for running large-scale CFD simulations.

A background in some or all of the following disciplines is required:

  • Multiphase flows such as segregated flows with interfaces and/or dispersed flows with particles.
  • Multiphysics and coupled simulations including partitioned simulation techniques.
  • Applied Mathematics (Solution of differential equations, linear algebra)
  • Software development skills relating to CFD models with emphasis on object oriented and parallel programming. Knowledge of programming in C++ within the OpenFOAM framework will be advantageous

A publication record in computational journals such as Journal of Computational Physics, Computers & Fluids and Computational Particle Mechanics is highly valued as is having strong spoken and written presentation skills, in relation to presenting advanced and complex theoretical issues to a non-expert audience.

Subject to your attributes and experience you will also:

  • Have demonstrable understanding of key design issues of hydraulic, coastal and marine structures e.g.:
    • Hydraulic design of pumping stations, intake structures, drop shafts and open channel structures
    • Wave interaction with coastal structures (wave loading, transmission, overtopping)
    • Wave interaction with marine structures, including fixed and floating structures, with an emphasis on marine renewables
  • Have a good understanding of particle-laden flows in marine environments including
    • Dense sediment flows with complex rheology.
    • Wave-particle-structure interactions (scour, erosion, sediment transport) and the relevant simulation techniques, such as resolved/unresolved simulations and CFD-DEM coupling.
    • Hold or be seeking to attain professional membership of a recognised institution (e.g. ICE)
