About Us

Across the FT Group, our people are united by a mission to deliver world-class information, news and services to our global audiences. We're a digital-first organisation made up of journalists, technologists, product managers, event planners, strategists, commercial and finance experts, marketing and communications specialists - and much more. Our strength is in our employees.

Our commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace

At the FT, we aim for employees across all regions to have a voice so that diverse perspectives are heard and valued. We believe that a supportive workplace is one where employees feel they can be themselves at work and have the flexibility they need to meet their personal needs. We'll continue to remove barriers for all, and in particular barriers facing employees from underrepresented groups.

The Role / Position Overview

We are looking for an engineer to join our Operations Support Team, who will help us to:

  • Continually transform how our 24x7 first line support team operates

  • Carry out our incident management and support processes

  • Work with engineering teams and stakeholders across the business

  • Be part of a team that provides a great service to the FT as a whole

The role would suit someone who wants to gain experience supporting the whole of the FT’s digital estate.  It would suit someone who has worked in a similar capacity before or someone who is excited by the prospect of joining a team that sits at the heart of everything that the Product and Technology department delivers.

We are also willing to take someone in a more junior capacity should they not have all of the skills and experience that we are looking for. We’d help you develop the skills and expertise necessary to fulfill the duties of the role.

The team is split across London and Manila, and our primary focus is providing support for the FT's technical systems when things go wrong. We frequently work on projects to develop new tools and improve processes in this area, but we're not an engineering team focused on product delivery.

We are part of the wider Engineering Enablement group at the FT, whose goal is to standardise and simplify how engineering teams build new technology systems, and advise teams on best practice.

We’re committed to equality and diversity in the tech industry, and want to encourage applications from underrepresented backgrounds. We support and encourage flexible working to be as inclusive as we can.

This is a partly shift based role working on a predefined shift pattern.  As a result the post holder will be required to work on bank holidays and weekends on a shared basis.

When not on shift, the post holder will get the opportunity to work on service improvements, projects and other initiatives.

What you will work on

Working alongside the team, you will:

  • Monitor the FT systems and services and respond to issues

  • Support our tools and processes

  • Use your experience to suggest improvements

Tech we work with

The FT is cloud only and the majority of the technical systems we support are built using a mixture of:

  • Amazon Web Services, Heroku

  • GitHub, CircleCI

  • Javascript, Golang, Python - and others

We monitor our systems using:

  • Pingdom

  • Graphite & Grafana

  • Prometheus

  • Splunk

  • ...and a number of in-house aggregation and dashboard tools

We don’t expect you to have worked with all of these, but having experience in similar technologies would be advantageous.

We would ideally want someone with  experience of AWS and some previous exposure to programming.

Key responsibilities of the role

  • Providing first line support and monitoring the FT’s technology estate

  • Maintaining and developing the tools and processes used by the team

  • Proactively managing and assisting with incidents

  • Pairing up with other team members to increase technical skills and capabilities

  • Promoting the team across the business, by running workshops and learning sessions

  • Working on service improvements and contributing to the delivery of our OKR’s

  • Dealing with and liaising with 3rd parties with regards to service provision and incidents

  • Creating and providing ad hoc reports

  • Carrying out technical and non-technical requests

Skills we are looking for

  • Excellent organisational and communication skills with a strong customer focus

  • Strong analytical and problem solving capabilities

  • Ability to coach and train others

  • Knowledge of programming and AWS would be an advantageous
