The Role / Position Overview

The role will focus on general commercial matters for a variety of FT group business areas and companies such as FT Strategies (FT’s consultancy business), Printing and Distribution, commercial matters for FT Audio & Video (such as production agreements) and Alpha Grid Media (FT group’s digital content production company).

The lawyer will be responsible for understanding their commercial and operational needs, providing them with legal advice on a broad range of issues, and the legal review and negotiation of commercial agreements. The lawyer will be comfortable reviewing and negotiating client agreements, supplier agreements and fielding ad hoc legal and business affairs questions. The lawyer will have a good working knowledge of intellectual property law as it relates to content production (such as copyright, licensing and production matters). The lawyer will be proactive, confident and comfortable working in a fast paced and agile environment.

In addition to the above the lawyer may also be asked to support senior team members with work from other areas of the business.

Required Skills / Experience 

  • UK qualified lawyer.
  • At least 4 years PQE, with at least two years private practice experience. 
  • Experience working in-house or on client secondments.
  • Strong experience in drafting and negotiating commercial contracts and advising on a wide range of commercial legal issues, including a good working knowledge of GDPR and related laws and regulations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels across the business.
  • The ability to manage relationships with senior leaders and build trust through collaboration.
  • The ability to think pragmatically about legal issues and deliver practical, business-focused advice and solutions. 
  • Professional, ethical, proactive, with a growth mindset.
  • Well organised, with an ability to effectively prioritise, and work within a team to ensure high quality and timely delivery in a dynamic and fast-paced working environment.
